Medieval village of Clauiano

A Friulian hamlet, one of the most beautiful in Italy...

History

The existence of the medieval village of Clauiano was acknowledged for the first time in 1031.

It has been listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy since 2004. Its charm is characterized by the historical architecture, typical of the Friulian tradition, composed of rocks and stones enhanced by decorations and arched gates, which have been largely left intact throughout the centuries.

Immersed in its rural surroundings, the village spreads over 18 square kilometers, with small cobbled streets, historic buildings and imposing courtyards. The houses, built next to each other, are embellished with stone architraves around the windows, and contribute to enrich the pure beauty of the village with their harmony.

What to visit in Clauiano

Besides the architectural beauty of the village, there are churches and houses that tell the story of Clauiano.

- CHURCH OF SAN MARCO: this countryside church dates back to 300 A.D. and boasts frescoed interiors, a semicircular stone basin, a masonry step which served as a bench and a 16th-century altar, part of the restoration that followed the passage of the Turks.
- CHURCH OF SAN GIORGIO: it is the main church of Clauiano. Sided by an important bell tower, built after the church, this place of worship contains an altar made in 1699 by Pasquale Lazzarini, characterized by double marble columns that hold a broken arch with carved figures.
Inside the church there are important paintings such as the representation of St. George saving the princess from the dragon, and the representation of the adoration by the Three Wise Men.
